tarting anything new, you're going to be nervous. You're going to be anxious and worried about the unknown. "What do I expect?" At each turn of events you find yourself taking a breath, recognizing you made it this far but really have no idea how far left you have to go. We are five days into this challenge and I finally feel put together enough to post a few thoughts.
To begin, I have to say I was a little disappointment in the kick-off event this year. I was expecting a charged environment, a dynamic climate, action, adventure, thrill and excitement. Instead, I listened to a few sales pitches and just how proud everyone is of these students. Our students don't need to hear you're proud of them. For those that have been through this before, they know what they've accomplished - good for them. That's great and they deserve a pat on the back. For those of us that were new (which there were a lot of new teams this year) we need encouragement and a taste of reality. We need to hear how hard this is going to be, and why it's worth it. Tell us we'll be up all night, what we should be doing during that time and why it's truly the most fun we'll ever have.
We are fortunate to have one of our team members with experience in the FIRST Robotics Challenge, and one mentor that has gone through both the student and mentor roles in the past. That, however, only makes up two individuals leaving the rest of us to experience all of this for the first time. I am truly excited now that we have met several times and have working plan. My confidence is up that we will be able to build and compete with a robot that we all can be proud of.
