Dear Friends,
The State of Michigan sponsored several grants last year aimed at sparking interest in Science and Engineering through FIRST Robotics (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. FIRST is a nationwide organization that affords thousands of high school students the opportunity to gain real world experience in a wide variety of fields including electrical, mechanical and structural engineering, industrial arts, and computer programming. The program allows students to apply knowledge gained in the classroom toward real world applications. FIRST Teams work one on one with mentors and other professionals to design, engineer, machine and assemble a working competition robot in only 6 weeks!!
MegaHurtz quickly realized the scope of the challenge once we attended our first 'kick off' event at Lake Michigan College. The first challenge was designing a robot capable of moving around the 1250 sqft playing field, picking up, passing, and throwing a 40” diameter yoga ball over 6 feet in the air! The robot had to be capable of doing some or all of those things while also being robust enough to withstand being bounced around and ran into by other robots in the competition while still remaining under 120lbs.
Not only did MegaHurtz survive our rookie year at the FIRST competitions, we flourished. We competed against teams with 15+ years of experience and resource and finished 17th out of 42 teams at the Saint Joseph competition and were selected as a team alternate for the final competition. On top of that, we were also awarded the 'Rookie Inspiration Award' for our innovative ideas and use of materials. All of our success could never have happened without our devoted team and help from our mentors, teachers and sponsors.
Please join us for a MegaHurtz Pre-Season Open House being held at the Buchanan Senior Center on November 20th, 2014 from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. The team will be discussing our 2015 fiscal plan, team development and competition goals as well as presenting and demonstrating last season’s robot.
MegaHurtz sincerely thanks our mentors and sponsors who supported us our rookie year. Without your continued support and generosity the creation of MegaHurtz would not have been possible.
(over please)
On November 20 we look forward to showing how you can support MegaHurtz by participating as a mentor, financial sponsor, or community sponsor providing supplies, goods, resources, or services for the 2015 season.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact us at by phone or email (megahurtz@buchananschools.com).
Sincerely, MegaHurtz FIRST Team 5056.
